The TBfree New Zealand programme, managed by the Animal Health Board, aims to eradicate bovine tuberculosis (TB) from New Zealand by testing all cattle and deer; regulating stock movement; and controlling the wild animals that carry and spread the disease. The programme is a government-industry partnership. We receive approximately $30 million annually in government funding. Our principal industry funder, DairyNZ, contributes $15.5m from the milk solids levy, and a further $8.5m from its share of the cattle slaughter levy. The beef sector provides $19m from the cattle slaughter levy. The deer sector contributes $1.5m from its levies on venison and velvet. Regional councils provide a further $6m.

A little bit of history ……………………The first known show was held in 1867 on the village green until the Government of the day granted its present site in 1900. Other than in the World War II years when the land was requisitioned by the Defence Department as a large camp area for New Zealand and American troops the Annual Show has been held there every year. From 1954 to 1990 a two day show was held, since then an annual one day show has been held and now attracts between six and eight thousand people each year. Riverlea Contractors is family owned - Mike and Claire Silson own and operate the business in partnership with Mike's parents John and Betty Silson. John and Betty started contracting in 1986 from the same rural residence that is now Mike and Claire's home in Riverlea, Kaponga. Mike has been driving since he was 14 years old. The business grew from small beginnings as John and a neighbour started harvesting grass "just for a hobby and just for the neighbours". The Silsons now employ up to 20 staff during the season, and offer a huge range of services covering HARVESTING, CULTIVATION and TRANSPORT. The harvesting side of the operation includes both round and square baling, mowing, teddering, swathing, self-propelled harvesting and loader wagons for bulk silage. Cultivation services include ploughing, power harrowing, levelling and full seeding.
