John and Betty started contracting in 1986 from the same rural residence that is now Mike and Claire's home in Riverlea, Kaponga. Mike has been driving since he was 14 years old. The business grew from small beginnings as John and a neighbour started harvesting grass "just for a hobby and just for the neighbours". The Silsons now employ up to 20 staff during the season, and offer a huge range of services covering HARVESTING, CULTIVATION and TRANSPORT. The harvesting side of the operation includes both round and square baling, mowing, teddering, swathing, self-propelled harvesting and loader wagons for bulk silage. Cultivation services include ploughing, power harrowing, levelling and full seeding.
