Auckland Grammar School is a state secondary school for years 9 to 13 boys in Auckland, New Zealand. It had a roll of 2461 as of June 2011, including a number of boarders who live in nearby Tibbs' House, making it the sixth-largest school in New Zealand, and the largest single-sex school.Grammar regards itself as the pre-eminent academic secondary school in New Zealand. Metro Magazine wrote "Grammar's results in the Cambridge system are comparable with most private schools, and it scores extremely well in Scholarship too".HistoryThe school was established in 1850 by the then Governor-in-Chief, Sir George Grey, and was officially recognised as an educational establishment in 1868 through the Auckland Grammar School Appropriation Act.Auckland Grammar School buildings contain two Category I historic places, the school's main block and a war memorial. An obelisk located in front of the school commemorates former students who fought in various wars. The school's main block, built in 1916 in the "Spanish Mission" style, is used for daily assemblies, exhibitions, and contains various classrooms. Surrounding the main hall in which the daily assembly is held are the school honours boards listing the names of the school's top scholars including Rhodes Scholars and Girdlers Scholars.The school owns a facility called the VentureLodge located in the township of Ohakune, in the central North Island, which is used by students for camps.

AIC is the only NZ school where all students study the International Baccalaureate Diploma and it has the largest number of IB Diploma students in New Zealand. Year 11 students study the Preparation Year Programme for IB Diploma which includes SAT preparation, while Year 12 and 13 students study the IB Diploma itself. AIC employs high caliber teachers, IB trained, and with experience of international education. Specialist staff include university counsellors with expertise and experience in student admissions to top universities around the world, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, as well as New Zealand. AIC is also an admissions testing centre for US and UK universities. AIC has a proven track record of academic achievement. IB Diploma scores are consistently well above the international average in pass rate, median and in top grades.Three students scored a perfect score of 45 points out of 45 in their 2010 IB Diploma examinations. This is an exceptional result compared with the IBO average of only one student in 500 globally achieving a perfect score. AIC graduates have received offers from 85% of the top 20 universities (THES: 2010 /11 World Rankings) Several graduates have been recipients of university scholarships, not only to universities such as the University of Auckland, but also to universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Princeton and Cambridge
