The Athenaeum Dunedin

The Athenaeum Dunedin

7 the Octagon, Dunedin ,
DAHiTA Dunedin Arts Hub in The Athenaeum Want to help create Dunedin’s newest cultural phenomenon? We have an agreement to lease the historic Athenaeum Building in the Octagon, for development of a central city arts & culture hub and an incubator for arts & culture-focused enterprises, incorporating: o facilities such as the Athenaeum library and existing theatre, o galleries, studios, performance venues and entrepreneurial arts spaces, and food and entertainment venues with arts and cultural performance components. The objective is a flexible mix of rentable venues, arts enterprise spaces, and collaborative community space to create a dynamic arts interface in the heart of the city's entertainment zone. Think of spaces where things happen in the public eye, rather than office & administrative facilities; an adventure through Dunedin art & culture. The vision is an immersive cultural environment that draws cruise ship passengers, families and senior citizens during the day; kids after school, genteel diners and art lovers in the evening; and avant garde hard core as the night gets late. The building offers 1600 sq. metres of floor space in total, approximately half of it at street level off the Octagon, including the existing 92-seat theatre. The other half is at basement level, with an adjoining courtyard space that is calling out for tables, chairs and coffee in the sun. Spaces vary from approx. 3m x 3m to circa 30m x 10m. Performance cafes... cultural centre... workshop space... artist's studio... exhibition... pop up venue... rave space. Short-term, medium, or long-term. Sole tenancies or co-working space. If you have a vision you're pursuing that you think might thrive in such an environment, come and check it out and talk about the possibilities. A Gallery Dunedin

A Gallery Dunedin

393 Princes Street, Dunedin ,
Conceived as a two-year project, ‘a gallery’ opened in February 2011 at 393 Princes Street, Dunedin and closed in September 2012. Strategically placed south of the center of town nestled between tattoo studios, sex shops and a needle exchange. What was integral in the selection of the gallery space was that it would be able to be viewed from the street through the street level floor to ceiling windows. This would allow the artists showing to be exposed not only to viewers visiting the gallery, but also those walking past, as a gallery was to represent artists that did not fit within the commercial gallery context or the so called experimental project space’s, this would be the best way to expose a group of local artists who wouldn’t otherwise not be shown to the widest audience possible.

Comic Addiction

Comic Addiction

35 Union St West, Dunedin ,
After struggling to maintain high audience attendance to comedy shows in Dunedin, New Zealand; Comic Addiction co-founder Lockie Scott saw that change is what is needed to breath new life into southern comedy. With their first show: Relapse to première in the 2013 Dunedin Fringe Festival, the tables are turned on the comics. That is the audience decides the topics and panellists have only 10-15 minutes to prepare 5 minutes worth of material to be performed then and there before other panellists have the opportunity to showcase their improvisational skills in the panel segments. Will these brilliant comedic minds sink or swim? It's anyone's guess. One thing's for sure, you won't see anything like it again.
