Villa Maria College, Christchurch, New Zealand was opened on 18 February 1918 with 14 pupils. It was founded by the Sisters of Mercy and served as a parish school when boys were admitted in 1921. From 1941 the school reverted to being a girl's college. Villa Maria College is a day school but it also had boarders between 1935 and 1979. The Christchurch Pops Choir formed in Christchurch in June 2011 and specialises in singing contemporary and 'popular' repertoire. This includes, but is not restricted to jazz, rock, gospel, musical theatre and many other forms of 'popular' music. The first of its kind in New Zealand, the Christchurch Pops Choir has created a world-class, professional sound that entertains, uplifts and moves the people of Christchurch. The choir sings all across Canterbury at such events as the REstart City Mall opening, Fanzone at the Rugby World Cup, several Christmas concerts, the World Buskers Festival, February 22 Memorial Concert at Hagley Park, opening New Zealand Music Month with Anika Moa, Champion Canterbury Awards and numerous private events.
