River End Creations

River End Creations

75A Peel St, Gisborne ,
The River End Story River End Creations is a story of eleven local artists who committed themselves to opening up a shop in Lowe Street (river end) in 2007 to bring local arts and crafts to the public. Eleven women set up a co-operative to run the shop and after cleaning, revamping and a celebratory opening night the shop was open for business. Knitting, candles, Maori crafts, mosaic and batik work were some of the work on offer. The co-op miraculously survived the earthquake just before Christmas 2007. Only one member lost all her stock in the shop but was able to salvage a few from her studio. Our mosaic member collected lots of material in the following months. Although Lowe Street doesn’t have a lot of foot traffic River End Creations soon became quite well known and had a loyal following. After a year in business it was decided to recess the project and reopen the following summer in a shop in the Ballance Street Village. Over November, December and January the shop did brisk business and the location was ideal. Although some of the original members left the co-op, others came in including woodworkers and painters, and after a successful season the shop was closed with plans being made to open again in the next summer. An empty shop in Gladstone Road (due for demolition) was available and River End Creations took up residence there for three months over the 2009-2010 season. The addition of an eftpos machine proved a good move and some members enjoyed very good sales. Once again interested artists are opening in November 2012 for the 3rd year at the Peel St shop.
