Dum Mast

Dum Mast

44 Fortunes Road,Pakuranga, Manukau ,
The inspiration behind the name Dum Mast ? 1. In Sufism, particularly among Qalandari Sufis of Indian Sub-continent “Dum Mast” is an expression of pure ecstasy and meditative trance-like state. Dum is simultaneously a synonym for breathing as well for timelessness. We are alive only as long as we have Dum. For the Sufis a Dum connotes a slow, deep meditative breathing. Mast (pronounced Mustt) means peaceful, trance-like state achieved by meditation. Dum Mast as an expression stands for ecstatic breath. A popular Qalandari song is “Dum-a-Dum Mast Qalandar ” meaning “with every breath an ecstatic, spiritual soul” 2. Dum is a special type of earthen oven used in Muhglai-Hydrabadi style of Indian cooking. A Dum means a slow process of charcoal oven based cooking. The word Dum is derived from Persian word for “air”. Dum cooked food is air cooked or baked. For Dum-cooking process requires three things – (1) Handi - a round spherical shaped clay pot. The bottom is thick and has a wide-mouth at top. (2) A clay saucer – to be used as a lid and placed on the top of the handi. The lid is sealed with hard paste made of flour and water. (3) The Handi with its lid covered is left on the charcoal for several hours, till the food is to be served. The heat creates the steam, it condenses and rolls down the curved walls. 'Dum' means warm breath signifying the steam. 3. My father was a poet and Mast was his Takhallus (Pen Name or Nom-de-Plume). Our family is known back in our home town as The Mast Family. 4. The expression Dum Mast is used as our name to express the qualities of patience and love in our service delivery to our valued customers.
