SOSSI (Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society Inc)

PO Box 790, Whangaparaoa ,
Shakespear Regional Park lies at the tip of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. It boasts sheltered bays, wetlands, regenerating native forest, cliffs, historic places and a lookout with views second to none. The Shakespear Open Sanctuary is a partnership between the Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society and the Auckland Council, and has the support of the New Zealand Defence Force, who also own land within the Sanctuary. The purpose of the Society is to turn this Regional Park into an Open Sanctuary by providing a safe haven for our native wildlife. To this end, we are building a pest-proof fence that will keep predators at bay. Our dream is that one day in the not too distant future, Shakespear Open Sanctuary will come alive with the calls of kiwi and the sights and sounds of myriad native wildlife. If you would like to find out more, please visit our website for more information. We are always looking for new supporters and volunteers to help us with this great project, so if you would like to get involved, please do get in touch!

Kennedy Park WWII Trust

Kennedy Park WWII Trust

139 Beach Road, Castor Bay, Auckland ,
History BL6_naval_gunsThe gun emplacements and tunnels you now see at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park are the remnants of a 6-inch” gun battery constructed during 1941 and 1942 as part of Auckland’s World War II defences. Castor Bay was one of three gun batteries whose purpose was to defend the northern approaches to the Rangitoto Channel; the others were at Whangaparaoa and Motutapu. The eastern approaches were covered by batteries located at Motuihe and Rangitoto and from 1945 Stony Batter. The batteries at North Head, Fort Takapuna and Bastion Point were the last line of defence. Petition Petition by the Kennedy Park WWII Installations Preservation Trust, for the public acquisition of the heritage building, and land, at 139 and 141 Beach Road Castor Bay (lots 12/13 dp 38175), this land and building to then be added to Kennedy Park for public use and enjoyment. These two pieces of land are being offered for sale by Housing New Zealand and are of great interest to developers! If sold, the most likely outcome will be the demolition of a Heritage Building and the erection of up to six multi story dwellings - protruding right into the park! To add your name to the petition, please visit www.kennedypark.org.nz
