A mecca for swimmers, surfers and picnickers in summer, in winter it is quite isolated, although surfing and fishing enthusiasts visit year round (with average winter daily maximum temperatures around 15 centigrade (60F); summer around 27 (80F)). The Ponsonby Swimming Club has been teaching kids to swim for 100 years. We’re a community and parent run non-profit organization with the goals of keeping our kids safe in the water and building their fitness through swim coaching. Give your children confidence and increase their skills in the water. Our two coaches are very well qualified. They have represented New Zealand to international level. They have coached for more than six years with the Ponsonby Swimming Club and for other schools. Built in 1897, Ponsonby Community Centre was initially a school. It was purchased by Auckland City Council in 1958 for use as a hall. The Centre has been rebuilt and completely refurbished since a fire in August 1999. Since 1990, the Centre has offered expanded services including OSCAR (out of school care & recreation) programmes, subsidised adult education and a pre-school as well as being a venue for hire. This Centre is owned and subsidised by Auckland City Council and is run independently by a Board of local residents and users of the Centre. This is a community facility for the local community. Your interest and input are needed by providing ideas and feedback on activities. Available Services: PONSY KIDS PRESCHOOL: Ponsy Kids aims to provide a secure, supportive, stimulating, friendly and welcoming environment for preschool aged children. A whanau atmosphere is important to us, our activities are catered for to meet the individual needs of each child. Safety of the children at the centre is paramount. We do not charge any of our junior players subscription fees. This means they get to play Rugby League free of any club charges. Our Seniors have been one of the most successful clubs in the last 10 years winning 4 tittles and producing numerous representative players. The pathway is there for fulltime professionals and we have had a host of juniors make the leap and now striving to play in Australia's NRL. For 17 Years this Christmas Festival has been about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas – but it's not just for Churches and Christians. The Festival has widespread support from across the community as a feature on the Porirua event calendar and draws on the generous support of the Porirua City Council, community funding agencies, local businesses, churches and community groups. It’s inclusive, family focused and brings the entire community together. Most of all It’s a flag in the ground at a time when people are told Christmas is all about spending money!
