Civil Defence Taupo

Taupo Civil Defence and Emergency Management coordinate rescue, response and welfare in emergencies and natural disasters in the Taupo District. We are based at the Taupo District Council. Civil Defence is a system of mobilising the full resources of the community to cope with disasters. A civil defence emergency is declared, usually by the Mayor, when a disaster is so large that normal emergency services (police, fire and ambulance) cannot cope adequately and the safety of the public is at risk. Civil Defence aims to prevent, reduce, or overcome any hazard or harm or loss to the public or property that may be associated with any emergency. Under the Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Act 2002, CDEM is a function and responsibility of regional, district and city councils. In Taupō, Civil Defence and Emergency Management is administered by the Taupō District Council, which is a part of the Waikato CDEM Group which covers the Great Waikato Region. For more information on the Waikato CDEM group visit their Facebook page here http://www.facebook.com/WaikatoCivilDefence Key risks for Taupo District Storms Earthquakes Volcanic eruption Lahar/Ash (as a result of volcanic activity) Seiche (Tsunami in a closed body of water – normally caused by major landslide)
