The Waitara Railway Preservation Society Was formed in 1999 with the aim of preserving the 7km long Waitara branch line in rural Taranaki. Our society purchased the branchline from Tranzrail and since 2003 we have run excursions over the branch using a mixture of our ex NZR rolling stock.
The train ride from Waitara climbs a 1 in 40 grade (the steepest on a preserved railway in New Zealand), passes under the SH3 over bridge and crosses the picturesque Waiongona Stream.
Train trips run on the first and third Sundays of each month with extra trips run during holidays.

Experience the spectacular spiral entrance to Ruakuri Cave. Marvel at the incredible limestone formations and crystal tapestries in an intimate group. Or, take a journey through the forest to magnificent Aranui Cave with its delicate stalactites, stalagmites and colourful flowstones.
Enjoy the sights, tastes and sounds of the Waiuku Village Market.
Take a step back in time on the Glenbrook Vintage Railway and step off in Waiuku to enjoy this historical township and the fabulous market stalls on offer.
Basecamp Wanaka Climbing Centre offers a standard rock climbing wall with top rope, lead and bouldering inside and out, as well as Clip 'n Climb; the newest thing in family entertainment. The standard rock climbing wall is just that, a standard climbing wall. Clip 'n Climb consists of funky climbs and uses automatic belays, so no one has to manage the rope.
