Ancient Briton Hotel

Ancient Briton Hotel

16 Leven St, Naseby, Ranfurly ,
Discover Naseby. Did you know that Naseby once had 26 Hotels with a population greater than Dunedin? Founded in the 1860's following the discovery of gold nearby, Naseby retains it's gold-mining town heritage and history. It remains largely untouched and unspoilt despite the passage of over 140 years since it was established to service the gold miners who flocked to Central Otago to seek their fortunes. It has somehow survived as a real and truly authentic "Central" town, with an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear that really has to be experienced to be appreciated. Built in 1863, The Ancient Briton was Naseby’s first Hotel and today is one of only two remaining. For the weary miners and high country shepherds it was not only a sanctuary offering respite from the cold but the town's social and cultural hub. Today it is still the meeting place of local high country farmers, musterers, curlers and townsfolk. The pub has been the clubrooms of the Otago Central Curling club for over 100 years, and displays the keenly fought silverware of the Maniototo. Curling’s Holy Grail, (and NZ’s oldest sporting trophy) ‘The Baxter Cup’, currently resides over the Bar at The Ancient Briton. High country farmer and poet Ross McMillan (who writes under the name of 'Blue Jeans') and Des Styles (gold panning master and another popular poet) , both living legends, and you'll find them sharing their passion for The Maniototo most good nights in the pub. At the Ancient Briton, we are here to give your family or group an enjoyable experience, with a warm personal style of service that is only found now in these parts. If you are doing the Rail Trail be sure to take advantage of our shuttle service, and come spend a night at The Briton. Take the time to complement your stay with a game of Curling, or a day just to take in the town’s attractions. With a separately built accommodation lodge and ensuited rooms, you will be comfortable, and have privacy when you need it. There are also two self contained motel units available.
