Our Backyard NZ

Our Backyard NZ

Opotiki College St John Street, Opotiki ,
‘Bush in a Box’ is a result of a unanimous product decision made by the students in the Young Enterprise team ‘Our Backyard.’ Our product would allow the young students of primary schools and early childhood centres throughout New Zealand to experience and interact with the natural beauty of our native bush from their class room. It will include several posters of various sizes of New Zealand’s one of a kind flora and fauna, accompanying these would be essential information, in both English and Maori, about them in the form of flash cards. This would not only allow teaching to students about the natural, rugged beauty of our native bush, but also show the children what it looks like and what its wildlife is. Inside the tube would be one large ‘backdrop’ photo with a size of 180cm x 90cm. This will be a shot of an area of native bush. Also there would be three medium sized photos of silver ferns, deer and rimu, which would be 60cm x 48cm. accompanying these would be 8 smaller photos of gecko, whio, kiwi, tui, weta, kereru, possum and kowhai flowers with dimensions of 21cm x 14.8cm. Also there will be a booklet which for use as a teaching resource. The students and teachers would then be able to choose how and where they would want to place the images. One possible function of the photos would be to create a reading corner or area where the students could sit amongst native wildlife whilst reading either a book of their choosing or using the flash cards. Some other items our product might include a CD of natural bush noises to let the students hear what the native bush at its prime sounds like, some touchy feely things such and possum fur and leaves that with be securely fastened in place to let children feel what the bush is like, a teaching resource booklet that will have things to read and quizzes/work sheets and Links to the web for information sites, game sites or photo sites
