Bijoux - Matt Rawlinson Jeweller

Bijoux - Matt Rawlinson Jeweller

208 Ponsonby Road, Auckland ,
Matt Rawlinson's interest in jewellery design started at an early age, having assisted his father, Kevin, (another renowned Auckland jeweller) in his store at Arts and Crafts Mecca, in 'The Brown Mill' during the 'seventies. After the demolition of 'The Brown Mill', Matt and his dad decided to open their own shop on Ponsonby Road in the 1980s and so a new jewel in the crown of Ponsonby was born - Bijoux Gallery. "As the son of a jeweller, I actually began threading beads when I was a toddler and took my first order from a craft shop, for copper and silver bangles, when I was eleven years old." Over the years, Matt has been commissioned to make pieces for television (including Hercules, Xena Warrior Princess, Power Rangers and, more recently, Outrageous Fortune) as well as for catwalk shows at New Zealand Fashion Week. "Each piece of jewellery has a story behind it and every piece in Bijoux has been made from the love of making it. I love my work and get great satisfaction from what I do." Matt is drawn to jewellery styles from throughout the world and he also admires the craftsmanship that has gone into antique pieces. "Those vintage pieces required fine, detailed work, which takes time and precision, as well as years of experience to create. I make a lot of engagement and wedding rings, which I like as I feel honored to be asked to make pieces that mean so much to someone. Jewellery can carry a lot of sentimental value and I've had the privilege to work with clients on some really special pieces, from turning old estate pieces into new, contemporary items to making special silver token boxes to hold locks of hair or a baby's first tooth." Matt has made numerous pieces for well-known national and international people. Bono from U2 came in and bought several pieces. Bill Clinton bought an arm-band with greenstone for his daughter Chelsea and Greg Johnson and other New Zealand musicians and actors have bought pieces from Bijoux.
Cherry Bishop

Cherry Bishop

30 Jervois Rd,Ponsonby, Auckland ,
Born in Helensville New Zealand , Cherry grew up residing on the family sheep and cattle farming property. At age 20 she traveled to Sydney Australia where she was accepted at the Sydney Institute of Technology (1981) and completed the first 2 years of the clothing design course offered there. While still a student at Sydney Fashion Institute she began selling her designs at Paddington market. This endeavor met with immediate success and a conflict quickly developed between the demands of a growing small business and continued full time attendance at the institute. Cherry chose instead to develop her business which would eventually wholesale to several Australian cities. In 1989 she traveled to New York as a tourist and fell in love with the energy and vitality of the city. The following year she received resident alien status in the U.S. and soon after opened “Halo” at 96 East 7th St in the East Village which quickly earned a customer base of hep downtown girls who came to depend on her for good prices and great fit. While running her store “Halo” Cherry studied at the renown Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and graduated with an Associates degree in Patternmaking Technology “ Magna Cum Laude” in December 2001. Post September 11th and following a move back home to New Zealand Cherry opened her namesake store “Cherry Bishop” in the former location of that notorious den of iniquity the “Pink Pussycat” at 500 Karangahape Rd where she continues to produce wearable clothing with a retro influence and great fabric and fit made in an extended size range of sizes 8-18.

Miss Crabb

The aesthetic sensibilities of the brand lie somewhere between a pared-back minimalist beauty and a darker romanticism. The pieces themselves have a naturalness and an enduring classicism to them: a subversive approach to shape and proportion which seems to highlight their irregular beauty. This combination of delicacy and strength allows for the versatility of the pieces intended to move with the wearer, wherever the day may take her. Texan Art Schools

Texan Art Schools

Newmarket, Ponsonby, Botany, Takapuna, Sylvia park, Auckland ,
We believe not only is New Zealand an amazingly beautiful & diverse country but so are it’s people. Therefore we focus on contemporary, quirky, well-designed gifts and products, rather than the traditional woolly sheepskins. Each store although slightly different, caries a vast selection of veritable goodies, everything from Art, mirrors, ceramics, jewellery, home-wares and more. This philosophy stems from our unique history. Texan was founded more than 15yrs ago as a unique forum for artists and designers graduating from Techs and Art Schools to show-case their work. Hence the name- a bit of a play on words: Get it Tex n Art schools (say it 3 times quickly). In fact many believe Texan was the catalyst for creating the “Design store” concept that now exists all over New Zealand. Originally, two adventurous mums set up the business, having realised the need for somewhere that new artists could go, that hadn’t quite reached the “gallery” stage but wanted to make a living from selling art. 5 years ago the business was sold, and with renewed passion and enthusiasm new stores were opened and the website created. Now the business is available to be licensed throughout NZ and even around the world for other talented people with a passion for true home-grown talent. Current stores are all in Auckland: *Newmarket: 366 Broadway Newmarket 09 529 1021 texannewmarket@clear.net.nz *Botany: 17 Garden Lane Botany Town Centre 09 271 3891 texbot@woosh.co.nz *Ponsonby: 95 Ponsonby Road Ponsonby 09 3766 064 texpon@woosh.co.nz *Takapuna: Westfield Shore City Takapuna 09 489 8671 texantakapuna@clear.net.nz *Sylvia Park: Sylvia Park Mall 09 9400 435 texsyl@woosh.co.nz but we’d really love to include the rest of NZ too!
