Rotorua Festivals

Rotorua Festivals

Deepawali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, symbolises the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. The word 'Deepawali' literally means rows of diya (clay lamps). The most beautiful of all Hindu festivals, Deepawali is celebrated by lighting up one's home with diya and candles, spectacular firecrackers and a variety of sweets in the company of family and friends. Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colours, is celebrated to glorify good harvest and fertility of the land. This colourful festival is celebrated with much fanfare by covering each other with coloured powder, and dancing to folk music and songs. Holi celebrations also help bridge racial, social and personal differences, and brings people and communities together. These two events are celebrated annually in Rotorua. Organised by the volunteers of the NZ Hindu Council, these events are smoke-free, alcohol-fee and meat-free with free entry to the public.
