Bio-Cosmo Technologies Ltd is a privately owned company based in Pukekohe. It was established in 1998 to develop a number of technologies that offer environmentally friendly alternatives to existing practices. The most prominent development has been an extremely rapid method of microbiological conversion of food wastes into organic fertiliser. The BIOCOSMO process provides ideal conditions within closed digesters for rapid biodegradation of food wastes using special bacteria. The resulting product has exceptional properties as an organic fertiliser, soil conditioner and plant growth stimulant. The dehydration that takes place requires no Biocosmo Technologies Ltd heating from external sources, and all nutrients present in the original foodstuffs are present (modified, stabilised and enhanced) in the finished product.
The first stage of the commercial application of this new technology for which a patent has been applied is now operational in Wiri, Auckland. This installation has been built to continue development of the process and to provide a facility for commercial processing food wastes. Relationships are sought with waste producers and collectors so that the waste recycling service may be progressed efficiently and effectively.
