Waimata Cheese Company is owned by Carol and Richard Thorpe, and has been handcrafting artisan vegetarian cheeses in a small factory on the bank of the Waimata River in Gisborne, since it began operation in 1994. They are now the third largest specialty cheese maker in New Zealand, after Fonterra and Goodman Fielder and produce 300 tonnes of cheese annually, from three million litres of milk supplied by local dairy farms, their own included. However successful Waimata Cheese Company has become, the focus remains that the product be reflective of the Gisborne region and cultural diversity. Throughout the years, the Waimata brand has become well known by New Zealanders, and in 2007 a new brand, Longbush, named after a Longbush reserve, was added to the company’s range of products. Waimata Cheese Company specialises in Blue and White moulded cheeses and their product range includes camembert, brie, blue brie, blue vein, feta, double cream camembert and double cream blue brie, Taepo and Manuka soft cheeses. The cheeses are handcrafted using traditional techniques without the use of stabilizers or inhibitors to artificially extend shelf life. Waimata Cheese Company currently supplies to most supermarkets in New Zealand, as well as numerous hospitality companies. Waimata Cheese Company also partakes in the weekly Gisborne Farmer's Market , held every Saturday morning.

Warwick and Jane converted their conventional farm to biological seven years ago for three main reasons: • Environmental sustainability. • Healthier animals via more nutritious soil. • Healthier meat for our family and yours. I am their daughter Rose - having recently returned from overseas I am re-studying to become a certified health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. My number one aim in helping my family with this business is providing eco-conscious consumers a quality, free-range, biological and ethical meat product. Most of NZ's quality produce is exported but with Haurata Eco-Lamb you are getting the best quality and know exactly where your meat is coming from, how it is farmed and treated. There is growing research that animal fat stores toxins, hormones and antibiotics – at much higher rates than plant produce and these have been linked to many adverse health effects. Meat is a good way to obtain our Iron, Zinc, B12, CoQ10 etc. But if animals are exposed to and ingest toxins we then accumulate these toxins in our bodies. “Vitamin and mineral content of food varies enormously with farming methods…In time, commercially fertilized soils become depleted and the foods grown on them suffer accordingly…healthy soil is the basis of health for all life forms” Fallon et al, 2001. By using minerals, trace elements, fish oil, seaweed and fungi instead of synthetic fertilizer to feed and improve the soil - we improve the sustainability of the land as well as producing a food source which is free from many chemicals common in pasture farming here in New Zealand. While we are not completely organic (as animals struggle when they get parasites), we limit drenching to necessity and use a product that does not stay in the system long term.
