Wairoa Club Inc

60 Marine Parade, Wairoa ,
In the early 1930’s several gentlemen of the town, including Arthur Haig, Mac Mckinnon, Roly Taylor and Theo Stewart used to meet on a Sunday morning for a drink. After a couple of years they moved to premises by the Wairoa Motor Garage and were joined by Hector Murdoch, Billy Hunt, Tom Shannon, Dick Buckingham and a few others. In 1934 Mr Harry Harker who was Mayor of the Town and also a director of Wairoa Wines and Spirits approached the Sunday gatherings and suggested forming a second club in the town and stated that he thought they may get the lease on an old house, where the present club stands. A meeting was held and attended by approximately forty men who gave Harry Harker authority to negotiate a lease on the premises. Each person attending the meeting agreed to put in ten pounds each and Wairoa Wines and Spirits became the club guarantor. From here the Wairoa Club was formed with Harry Harker as the first president. Today it is a well established Club overlooking the beautiful Wairoa River (famous for the Whitebaiting and water skiing), with over 800 members it sure is the place to be. Wairoa is a wonderful part of the country to live and has plenty to offer.
