The school was founded in 1980 from the amalgamation of two schools, St Mary’s High School, operated by the Sisters of Mercy (who arrived in Greymouth in 1882) and Marist Brothers Boys’ School operated by the Marist Brothers (founded in 1892). John Paul II High School was integrated into the State education system by the agreement of the proprietor of the school the (Catholic Bishop of Christchurch) and the Minister of Education in 1983.
Karoro Learning is a tertiary division of Greymouth High School. We specialise in foundation training for adults, and in distance computer training. You can find us at www.karoro.co.nz

Karoro Learning is a trading division of Greymouth High School. We are not a separate entity, but we operate on a different campus and provide “non-compulsory†education. We specialise in training for job-seekers. Training includes distance education throughout New Zealand, campus programmes in Greymouth and training and HR services for West Coast workplaces.
Established in 1994, Karoro Learning operates from its Greymouth base situated at 180 Tainui Street. We share our location with Mawhera Services Academy – another division of the school.
