So what makes Hokitika so special? Well for starters, unlike other West Coast towns we have embraced our beach. To be honest it is hard to ignore, the ocean practically laps the main street. Framed by the Southern Alps, our beach is a place to walk, to watch the sunset, to share a laugh with friends or enjoy a coffee. Hokitika has that relaxed beach town feel with much of what a larger city has to offer, apart from traffic lights and problems of getting a park.
There are probably more galleries and artist studios per capita than anywhere else in New Zealand. Wander round town and watch the artists at work in their studios. There are world renowned pounamu carvers, photographers, painters, gold and silver smiths, glass blowers, sculptors, wood turners and potters.
Hokitika is also the perfect base for your wider West Coast holiday. The Glaciers and Punakaiki are just a day trip away and closer by there are wild rivers, two serene lakes and a range of the best tramps and rainforest walks in New Zealand.
But in the end it is the people that make Hokitika a cool little town. Many are the descendents of those tough old gold miners, others have been attracted by the wild scenery and relaxed atmosphere. We all enjoy that slower pace of life, the time to stop, enjoy the view, have a chat and we welcome visitors.
