Shaolin Kempo is a traditional Chinese Martial Arts system that has it's roots in Chinese Gung Fu (Kung Fu). Our system is great for children and adults with separate classes according to age and experience. The Robert Gemmell Martial Arts organisation are leaders in the field Martial Arts with proven success in New Zealand since 1958. Robert Gemmell believes that the martial arts are much more than fighting systems. He points out that in its early development the movements were first designed as exercise, stretching and breathing. The fact that the fighting techniques of animals were introduced and expanded to include self defence does not negate its original concept. Too often today, young Instructors as a result of their own self defence emphasis, portray the martial arts for fighting purposes only. Conversely RGMA places a greater emphasis on martial arts as an exercise for the mind and body, secondly as discipline thirdly for self improvement, then self defence and lastly as a fighting system. However, let it be said that RGMA, through the combination of arts taught does produce a high level of effectiveness in the fighting arena along with, as Robert Gemmell says, "To be the best fighter one must first master the art of non fighting."

The Sunderland Education Trust founded Sunderland in 2007 as "Sunderland School and College". It was the first private school in Waitakere City (West Auckland). In 2010, Academic Colleges Group (ACG) took over the management contract for Sunderland, changing the name to ACG Sunderland. Student body ACG Sunderland provides education to boys and girls from Years 1 to 13. Curriculum ACG Sunderland offers the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Subjects include English, Mathematics, Co-ordinated Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Art, Geography and Physical Education. ICT is integrated. There is a Spanish teaching room and rooms for learning support, ESOL, College art and Primary School art. Sports and Activities ACG Sunderland is adjacent to the Waitakere Trusts Stadium, where students have access to sporting facilities, including: netball, tennis courts, Badminton swimming complex, athletics track and playing fields. Science and Technology ACG Sunderland offers computer suites with class sets of computers for both the Primary School and College. The suites are equipped with SMART Boards. Most classrooms have Built-In Data projectors. Both the Primary School and College use science laboratories and a technology room. The Arts ACG Sunderland is equipped for music and drama with Primary School and College music rooms, a drama room and 250-seat auditorium. Sunderland was involved in the ACG Schools 'Imagine' Concert 2010.

Waitakere College is again participating in the ASB Stage Challenge 2014 competition. This competition is based for secondary schools wanting to get messages out to the public about a big issue in the world.
