Genghis Khan Restaurant - Wellington

Genghis Khan Restaurant - Wellington

25 Majorbanks Street, Wellington ,
[ Where it begins ] In the 13th Century, the greatest land conquest in world history occurred under the rule of Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire was born. The Mongolian army’s daily meal was tenderised strips of meat carried with the warriors on horseback. After battle, the Mongols would go hunting with lance and bow and arrow. The meat, quickly frozen by the chilled air on the arid steps was thinly sliced and barbecued on their metal war shields. Slender branches from trees were used to toss the food – a kind of Mongolian chopstick. This meal came to be known as their “Victory Meal”, and has been passed down to the present day by their descendants. Today, the war shield is now a standardised round plate, still true to the original shape and metal. The small branches are now the elongated chopsticks used by our chefs. The Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ Restaurant now invites you to join us and eat in the manner of these great warriors, no matter what the occasion. The Genghis Khan Restaurant has been trading since 1983, we locally source our vegetables and meats. [ The Concept ] to create your unique stir fry Take a bowl and help yourself to the noodles and the fresh cut vegetables of you choice. Add the meat of your choice - beef, lamb, chicken or pork; or any of the combination. Then the sauces and spices of your choice. From our experience you will learn the combination most tasty for you. Finally, hand the bowl to our chef who will cook the food in just a minute on our gas-fired barbecue. Watch and wait, then return to your table with your bowl. The waiter will bring you our special Mongolian bread rolls ‘Shao Ping’ baked freshly every morning. These are tasty filled with the barbecue. Best thing is that it's all you can eat.

Astoria

Astoria

159 Lambton Quay, Wellington ,
A celebrated atmosphere is fuelled by the café’s contribution to the popular park, particularly when the sun graces us with its presence. On colder days, loyal clientele enjoy the cosy expanse of our vintage interior. The menu is inspired by seasonal produce, paired with coffee roasted on-site. Astoria has proudly served over 1000 customers daily, since 1996. The large space seats 150 (100 inside and 50 outdoors) offering a variety of perspectives, while ensuring one rarely waits for a table. Our food is intended to nourish and indulge. It is uncluttered and generous – familiar with flare. Vegetarian and gluten-free patrons will not be disappointed and all produce is free-range where possible. Breakfast includes time-honoured classics – some things are too good to meddle with. The lunch menu is served throughout the afternoon and into the evening, with the addition of plates to share. Inspired by seasonal ingredients we make four menu changes during the year, though favourites remain due to popular demand. Counter food is prepared on-site, including breads, cakes, biscuits and slices made daily by our Baker. All jams and preserves are also made in-house. The selection varies weekly; again with the exception of items our regulars suggest they can’t live without. A number of notable, well-priced wines are also available by the glass. Our drinks loyalty card is popular with locals.
