Discovery Kindergarten

Discovery Kindergarten

3 Pullen Lane, Porirua ,
The kindergarten serves the self-contained, suburban community of Whitby. The kindergarten children go on to attend four primary schools in the area. The kindergarten has a close reciprocal relationship with Discovery School next door. There is a local library, several parks and reserves, a shopping mall and medical and dental services. The community is very supportive of Kindergarten and teachers. The kindergarten environment is planted with attractive mature natives. It has gently sloping grounds which present opportunities for children to learn to negotiate gradients in a safe environment. We have permission from the school to use its field, and we often do this. There is a large covered sandpit and a large deck. We are a well resourced kindergarten and provide children with a variety of equipment to allow for development in all areas of the curriculum. The programme is soundly based on the children’s interests with children identifying these interests and supporting them by providing resources and engaging children in conversation to support their learning to deepen their developing understanding. The progression and development of these interests are placed on our planning walls within the centre. These show both group and individual learning. These stories are also placed in the child’s profile book, which is continuously being updated with the latest stories and is available at all time for whānau to read.

First Five Early Childhood Centre

First Five Early Childhood Centre

8 Upper Main Drive, Porirua ,
First Five is a community-based, not-for-profit early childhood centre that provides education and care for children aged between 4 months and 5 years. Because we are a non-profit organisation, your fees go directly toward running and maintaining the centre, and providing the best possible environment for your children to grow and learn. Our philosophy is based on the principle of partnership between parents/whānau and teachers to provide a child-initiated curriculum. First Five has a highly experienced and well-qualified teaching team of 7, with a very low turnover of teachers. The centre operates a ‘primary caregiver’ system to ensure children’s individual wellbeing and to develop and promote relationships between teachers and children and their families. The curriculum is carefully planned and is based on the principles of Te Whâriki and Kei Tua O Te Pai, to foster each child’s development with care and education elements intertwined to promote holistic development. First Five is committed to children feeling safe, enjoying their experiences and having fun at the centre. Visit our website at www.firstfivechildcare.co.nz What is Te Whâriki? – He aha a Te Whāriki? Te Whâriki is the Ministry of Education's early childhood curriculum policy statement. Te Whâriki is a framework for providing for children's early learning and development within a socio-cultural context. It emphasises the learning partnership between teachers, parents and whānau. Kaiako (teachers) weave a holistic curriculum in response to children's learning and development in the early childhood setting and the wider context of the child's world. Ministry of Education - Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga & ERO - Te Tari Arotake Mātauranga As a licensed and chartered centre First Five receives government grants towards the cost of running the centre. We provide 20 hours free ECE to all children over 3 years of age. For information on our current fees and availability of spaces please email us on firstfiveinc@xtra.co.nz or ring the centre and ask to speak to the supervisor. Because we are a not-for-profit centre we have some of the lowest fees in the Wellington area. Our commitment is to provide high quality, affordable childcare to members of our community. Mid Winter Dip - Plimmerton Kindy

Moana Road, Plimmerton, Porirua ,
This great community event is in its 17th year, and will be at Karehana Bay at the north end of Plimmerton, with lots of entertainment, food and fun for all the family. Entry is by a gold coin donation on the day. “It's the perfect time to show how tough you are and do something out of the ordinary … most of our kindy children take part, and nobody wants to be shown up by a three-year-old.” All registered Dippers go into the draw to win spot prizes from our fabulous sponsors. Dippers are encouraged to dress up in fancy dress - if you are crazy enough to run into the sea in the middle of winter, then you are certainly crazy enough to dress up in the middle of the day! There will be prizes for best dressed male, female, kid and group as a further incentive. From 12pm on the day, there will be numerous activities for kids, including a beach dig and a sand castle competition. Stalls will be open from noon onwards selling a variety of items, including hot sausages, warm soup, warm BLT sandwiches, tea, coffee, and cake. There will be raffles open to all. The main raffle will have awesome themed prize packs consisting of items generously donated by our sponsors. Tickets for this raffle will be sold by kindy parents in the weeks leading up to the Dip.
