This blog was inspired by a visit to a BBQ caravan in Kaikoura. People on the South Island simply love to chat and whilst checking into our hotel and announcing to the lady that ran the fine establishment that I was “starving” she recommended 5 or so good eateries in Kaikoura. The most intriguing place on her list was a caravan that served BBQ seafood by the side of the road on the way to the seal colony. I hail from England where eating food, let alone seafood, from that back of a van/caravan is almost certain to secure one a nice case of food poisoning and should only be attempted after a few too many to pints. The rules of dining are thankfully very different in NZ so after unpacking we decided to hot foot it around the bay and explore what the caravan had to offer. There were a few of us. We ordered crayfish patty, paua patty, scallops and green lip mussels. We each tried a bit of each others and were blown away by the great fresh flavor. I kick myself now for not taking a picture of this caravan of seafood delights in the middle of know where. Wanted to go back the next day and explore the menu further but unfortunately we had to move on to the next adventure. This blog is written by Lucy Mutch. She spends most of her time eating in Wellington NZ.
