.............................................................................................. Brief History - The Cajon / Box Drum When African Slaves were brought to South-America, they were not allowed to play drums. They started to use simple wooden boxes and shipping crates as substitutes. Cajon drums or Box Drums are drums presently crafted out of wood, but the Cajon drums of yesteryear were in the form of simplistic boxes, tiny drawers from dressers or crates for fish. The word “Cajon” derives from the Spanish language and when translated means “box.” .............................................................................................. The playing surface of each drum has been made specific to each drum. It is placed on the body during the sanding process so that it fits perfectly. Each drum is then beautifully finished with 4 coats Danish Oil to give a long lasting protection and lustre. In the future any worn areas or scratches can be easily touched up with a small amount of oil. Drums are personally handcrafted in North Canterbury by Carla Zurne t/a All Things Wood.
